RM3376   Strüverite, a Ta- and Fe-bearing variety of rutile

Strüverite is a variety of rutile rich in tantalum and iron, with the formula (Ti,Ta,Fe)O₂, with variable proportions of niobium (Nb). When the proportion of Ta>Nb is called strüverite, but if Nb≥Ta the variety has been named ilmenorutile. The specimens from this locality in Madagascar have been mainly determined to be of the Ta-rich variety: strüverite. An interesting specimen with a very special chemistry.

RM3356   Aegirine with zircon, titanite and fluorcalciopyrochlore

This specimen comes from unique find made at Tizi n’Ouazane pass in High Atlas, Morocco. This small find yielded specimens of feldspars with aegirines overgrown by unusual, contrastive yellow zircons, chamosite, magnetite and andradite. But what is the most unusual in this find is presence of the fluorcalciopyrochlore at some specimens. This specimen shows a elongated group of aegirine crystals with a good size (on 7 cm., the biggest size found) with perfect defined terminal faces. They are accompanied by yellow zircon crystals, with classic tetragonal forms, with prism and single dipyramide, very bright yellow color, creating a great contrast on the dark aegirines. Also some zircon crystals, with very short prism and dominating pyramids. Fluorescent under UV light. Titanite is brown elongated crystals. Fluorocalciopyrochlore occurs as octahedral crystals. A really unique specimen.

Size: 7.7 x 2.6 x 1.9 cm.

These hematites come from a small rhyolite quarry very near the community of Nador, on the road to Melilla.

RM3239   Goethite and quartz

This specimen is totally different from those that we usually see in the market of this Moroccan locality. The matrix is a group of quartz crystals, with a soft amethyst tone, and partially covered with chalcedony, in tiny, shiny crystals. On this matrix there is a large group of goethite crystals, lanceolate, dark brown in color and also covered with chalcedony. But millimeter quartz crystals stand out above them, most of them doubly terminated. I had never seen specimens that looked like this. Very interesting.
