RM627   Quartz (amethyst) with "hour glass"

Adrar Trich Boû Oudi, Tata, Guelmim-Es Semara, Morocco

These doubly quartz crystals with amethyst hour glass color zoning never are always amazing. In this specimen we see this internal color zoning and delicate and thin brown filamentous inclusions. Defined edges and faces, of course. To increase its interest, one could see some faces of the prism and rhombohedra with opalescent dull luster, while other rhombohedral faces are completely transparent and allow us to see clearly the geometric color zoning inside the crystal. On the back shows usual for these specimens recrystallized contact. A specimen to enjoy crystallography and aesthetics.

Size: 3,0 x 2, 0 x 1,2 cm.
Found in 2009.

RM628   Smoky quartz

Anderson's Gully (Anderson's Creek), Mooralla, Southern Grampians Shire, Victoria, Australia

Specimens of this Australian locality are uncommon in the maket, but their beauty makes them stand out from the smoky quartz samples. It is very curious how these specimens nodules are found into rhyolitic matrix geodes called "thundereggs"; this vugs are usually covered by small milky quartz crystals, some amethyst... They are in themselves a treasure of Nature. In this specimen we see a group of very defined crystals, one doubly terminated. Excellent transparency and smoky color zoning. On matrix. A very aesthetic and elegant piece.

RM617   Variscite

Palazuelo de las Cuevas, Zamora, Castilla y León, Spain

In this double specimen we did not want to separate the two parts because symmetry gives them a very nice aesthetic touch. We can observe nodular aggregates of variscite. The green color is very intense. They are embedded in a type of silicified breccia matrix with iron oxides. Both are polished in the front side (which allows us enjoy the structures) and natural cut in the back side. To find samples of this quality you must go back to the past times.

Palazuelo de las Cuevas, Zamora, Castilla y León, Spain

In this double specimen we did not want to separate the two parts because symmetry gives them a very nice aesthetic touch. We can observe nodular aggregates and possible tigmatic folds in the veins of variscite. These meandering folds are caused by the flow of a viscous fluid into a more fluid media. The green color is very intense and it is combined with whitish and yellowish areas. They are embedded in a type of silicified breccia matrix. Polished in the front side (which allows us enjoy the structures) and natural cut in the back side. To find samples of this quality you must go back to the past times.

RM607   Globular Fluorite with calcite, quartz and limonite

Singuerlín, Can Franquesa, Santa Coloma de Gramenet, Barcelona, Catalunya, Spain

Curious globular aggregates formed by numerous fluorite octahedral crystals that have grown together, reaching this globular shape. If you look closely under magnification the specimen you can observe different growing phases. So we can see perfect small colorless octahedra, others as groups of a few crystals sharing faces and symmetry, and some with many octahedrons close to this globular shape. Very fluorescent under SW-UV.
This green color is the best ever found for this site, with transparence and brilliance. They are disposed on an matrix of hard porphyry covered by minute quartz crystals, with calcite and goethitized cubic pyrite.

This area is known as Singuerlín (a neighborhood of Santa Coloma de Gramenet city, close to Barcelona) and from 60's collectors has found these globular aggregates with tones between white, yellow or slightly greenish. Then some specimens were analyzed and labeled as gearksutite. More recent analysis did not indicate the presence of this species but only fluorite.
