RM1357   Baryte and marcasite

Bou N'has Mine, Oumjrane area, Alnif, Er Rachidia, Meknès-Tafilalet, Morocco

Huge size parallel growth of tabular crystals of barite, very sharp and with very well defined faces and edges. They are translucent and very bright and have flattened crystals of marcasite showing the twin known as "cockscomb".
These mines are located approximately 50 km south of Alnif, near the border with Algeria. This area was already mined in medieval age for the extraction of copper. In the 60s of the last century, French companies expanded shafts and mineral extraction.

RM1355   Pyrite

Very brilliant specimen formed by numerous polysynthetic growths of octahedral pyrite crystals. The golden color is superior and brilliance, as we said before, is really excellent. A fine piece from a not well represented locality.

RM1229   Baryte with calcite

San Pedro mine, Sierra de Enmedio, Almendricos, Lorca, Murcia, Spain

Aesthetic group of well-developed baryte crystals from this Murcian locality. They are disposed forming a "open-book" shape with parallel growth. They stand out as being covered with small, bright and transparent crystals of calcite, some chalcedony, peppered by small crystals of goethitized pyrite and manganese oxydes. A piece of an unusual locality not easy to find in the mineral market.

RM1247   Baryte with pyrolusite and goethite

La Gaviota mine, Cala de la Cola de Caballo, Portmán, La Unión, Murcia, Spain

Specimens of this mine are unusual in the market. This sample, from an former collection, is one of those pieces that make us appreciate the minerals of the La Gaviota mine. On a matrix of goethite, partially covered with tiny crystals of pyrolusite, are disposed very aerial a rich group of tabular barite crystals. Between translucent to transparent. An opportunity to represent perfectly this mine in our collection.

RM1228   Pyrite

La Blanquiza mine, Valdeperillo, Cornago, La Rioja, Spain

These old specimens of pyrite belong to one of those curiosities that Nature offers us. In these pieces we can see crystals those are showing no apparent cubic symmetry. They have, more or less marked, parallelepiped forms unusually flattened. The edges are completely natural and the crystal has been consolidated on its matrix to avoid its possible detachment.
This kind of crystals put into question certain aspects of the cubic symmetry of pyrite. For more information on this topic you can read articles like King & Prewitt 1979 (Amer. Min., 64, 1265-1271).

Mundo Nuevo mine, Huamachuco, Sanchez Carrión, La Libertad, Perú

Druse of brilliant hyaline quartz crystals, with transparence and well-developed prism. Some of them showing the Japan-law twin. Well defined, flattened, transparent to translucent. From a classic Peruvian locality which was inaccurated located in Pasto Bueno district, Pallasca province.

Galena specimens from this Kosovar mine are not very common. In this sample we can enjoy a brilliant group of galena crystals of good size, well defined, with faces of the cube and the octahedron. Very aesthetically disposed on a matrix with quartz crystals, lenticular siderite and pyrite.

RM1203   Arsenopyrite with quartz, manganoan calcite and boulangerite

Brilliant specimen showing a very well defined crystals of arsenopyrite covering the matrix, some of them with good size. They are accompanied by brilliant quartz crystals, pinkish calcite due to the content of Mn and small groups of boulangerite needles. A very luminous specimen.

RM1153   Azurite with malachite

Khanong open pit, Sepon Mine, Vilabouly, Savannakhét, Lao People's Democratic Republic

A novelty in Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines 2015. A rich group of well defined azurite crystals, good brilliance and with transparence. The blue color is very intense. With malachite fan-shaped aggregates. They are disposed in a vug into the gossan-cuprite matrix. Showy specimen from a copper and gold mine located in Laos, not well-known and less represented in collections. Few specimens from this mine had been previously seen in the market but with lower quality.

RM1050   Hematite

N'Chwaning III Mine, Kuruman, Kalahari manganese fields, Northern Cape, South Africa

Group of very sharp hematite crystals, one of them of greater size and rich in faces. We can observe the positive and negative rhombohedrons truncated by the pinacoid and perfectly visible the hexagonal dipyramid well developed. Metallic luster is excellent and it has an intense black color. A very interesting speciemen of this South African mine.
It comes from the specimens of Luis "Louie" Bravi Antonio Teixeira Leite (1942-1999), a Portuguese mineral dealer who lived many years in South Africa.

RM1049   Cronstedtite

Brunita open pit, Sierra Minera de Cartagena-La Unión, La Peraleja, La Unión, Murcia, Spain

Cronstedtite is a rare iron silicate of the kaolinite-serpentine group. This is a good representative of the cronstedtite specimens from this classic Spanish mine. It shows a lustrous, black, trigonal crystals forming groups on the matrix. It is a rare oportunity to get good specimens of this species.

Group of crystals of pyrrhotite completely replaced by brilliant pyrite crystals, which perfectly preserve the hexagonal shape of the original species. It is accompanied by groups of sphalerite crystals, very sharp, intense black color and good luster, with complex forms and twins. With some arsenopyrite. A very aesthetic, brilliant (more than in pictures) and classic European specimen.

In this specimen we can observe two generations of aurichalcite. A first generation as small rosettes formed by lanceolate greenish crystals and second with thiner crystals, needle-like, some of which are included in rhombohedral calcite crystals, with a light blue color. Stand in a very aesthetic way on the matrix of goethite. A very balanced sample.

Unusually species for this Moroccan mine. The dealer confirmed the locality, I initially thought in Imiter. This is a group proustite crystals with good red color, brilliance and transparence, some of them contacted due to the cavity, others showing terminations and striated faces. In calcite matrix.

Brilliant and sharp azurite crystals that have growth in separate vugs, with prismatic forms and defined terminal faces. With good color, luster and some transparency, one of them is partly substituted by malachite. Disposed in two cavities of this hard rocky matrix.
In Kerrouchen, a classic Moroccan mineral locality, each miner has his own "hole" and get its samples. T
here are several mines aligned on a particular stratigraphic level, with low gallery development. Miners obtain the specimens by hammering, so obtaining them in matrix it is not easy.

RM534   Orthoclase with clinozoisite

La Batllòria, Montseny-Montnegre Mts., Sant Celoni, Vallès Oriental, Catalunya, Spain

Group of huge size orthoclase crystals, showing the complex faces of the baveno twin together with complex prisms and false rhombohedrons. Nice slightly orange color and defined edges and faces. It is accompanied by small crystals of light green clinozoisite, some quartz and limonitized pyrite. It was collected many years ago near of the Montseny massif; this area was well known for orthoclase mineral collectors. A classic from a classic collection. Mr. Daunis and Mrs. Ruscalleda (wife) collection were specialized in Spanish quartz and orthoclase specimens.
